Am I to understand that the update for Cricut Craft Room now means I CAN NOT cut with the Imagine using CCR?

Narelle said...

Well, it's not working for me Jennie. But it is still working for some others. I haven't given up hope yet. I just haven't had the time to spend on it lately. :)

So... after the above reply I decided to try again. (I have a new computer which is running Windows 8.) My Imagine is now printing AND cutting!!!!!

Hi Narelle,
I just inherited a Cricut and hope to buy SCAL to use with signs I make. Trying to confirm it will work before ordering from Amazon. When I turn the Cricut on, it just shows "Cricut V1.0". Not a model name like Expression or others I've seen mentioned. I am a complete newbie to this world, so I know nothing! :)
It seems one thing I read sounds like I'll be ok to order it, and then others say no. Hoping you can offer some guidance/wisdom - thanks so much in advance!

Any current version of SCAL won't work with the Cricut anymore. Only SCAL version 1 and 2 will work and they shouldn't be available for purchase anymore.

Your Cricut version number will show 1.0 until you update its firmware.

could you let me know how to get the old version of firmware for my cricut? I accidentally updated my firmware and I am unable to use sure cuts alot. I have read that you can download the old version of design studio trial but I am unable to locate this. Pls help! oosak@yahoo.com

I have an expression and want to get scal. My firmware is 2.43 can I?

Narelle said...

The latest version of SCAL (v3) is not compatible with any Cricut machine. Only the previous versions (v1 & v2) of SCAL worked with the Cricut. Those versions are not available anymore. (Legally that is...) If you can find a copy of SCAL 2 then Expression firmware of 2.43 will work with it. (Well, mine does...)

When I try to update the firmware on my Expression it skips step 3 in the CCR update - all of those little circles turn green and it says my update was successful. But I know it's not because my machine still can't read some of my newer cartridges and will read "cartridge comm error" and/or "George and Basics Shapes loaded" (when it's not). Do you have any ideas on why it may be doing this? Thank you!

Narelle said...

Could you tell me what firmware version is currently on your Expression?

ames724 said...

It was at 2.31 then I updated through design studio to 2.34 and craft room to 2.43. Both updates say they're successful but my machine still won't read new cartridges (old ones are ok) so I'm thinking it wasn't really successful?? When I do the update in craft room it skips through step 3 so I'm wondering if that's the problem? Thanks.

Narelle said...

If your Expression is showing 2.43 on the screen when you power it on, then the update has been successful. Are you getting those errors on the machine itself?

Have you tried a reset? (It probably won't help but it's worth a try.) This link will take you to the reset instructions on my old blog. (Another post I need to bring over here...) http://myfaqcricutds.blogspot.com.au/2009/01/resetting-cricut.html

ames724 said...

Yes, the errors are on the cricut screen. I've tried a reset (thank you for your posts, by the way, they are very helpful!!). Bummer, maybe my cricut is just too old. Thanks for your help!

Narelle said...

I'd give PC customer service a call. They might be able to help troubleshoot for you. :)

Call 1-877-7CRICUT

ames724 said...

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, customer service is not really saying anything....they offered to link the cartridges to craft room and say maybe I need a new cricut. :(

Lin said...

Help Narelle, I just got my new Explore 3 days ago and am dead in the water. I depend on your excellent written tutorials to learn as Cricut is abysmal in this area. They should hire you to be the official instructor so we can learn without going on tranquilizers. You are the best, you got me going in the craft room, I am hoping you will do the same for the impossible design space.

Lin

Narelle said...

Oh Lin.... I don't have an Explore and don't plan on getting one in a hurry. So I haven't spent a whole lot of time using Design Space. (Other than to find all its short-comings....!) :)

But if there's something in particular that you're having trouble with let me know and I'll check it out for you.

PC have released a stack of DS videos this week. You can check them out at http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCenmvBlGmukLZG0ELpS6mRQ

They are pretty good... much better than some of the other non-PC ones that I have seen. :)

I'm about to have a meltdown and need step by step help, please. :((( I found SCAL2. I have the very first cricut and the Expression 2. I know it doesnt work with my E2 so I wanted to use it with the old cricut. Anyhoo, I saw online where I needed to upgrade. I did. Now v1.45 is too high. Can someone please tell me how to remove the update? I got a trial version of CDS but it isn't recognizing my machine is plugged in. I'm ignorant when it comes to this and am about to have a panic attack.

Unknown said...

Works with expression firmware 2.34 also. Well on mine...

Unknown said...

I think I might have updated my Gypsy incorrectly because I now have two editing areas and can't pull up any of the files that I have saved to use with my cricut expression. I'm afraid to do anything at this point because I'm afraid it will wipe out my cartridges on my gypsy and I won't be able to reload them again. I love my gypsy. I can do things 10 times faster than I can in Craftroom and I can do it from anywhere.

Thelma said...

Any idea where I can get SCAL 2? I didn't buy it when it was available for my non-crafty crafter (wife) now she won't let me hear the end of it. Please help.

Unknown said...

To Thelma who asked about getting SCAL 2. I saw a few copies of SCAL 2 on ebay just today (Feb. 6, 2015) so if you're still reading this thread, you may be able to grab one. Don't know the seller's name, but you could do a product search. Good luck!

Has anyone recently (2014-2015) tried to download the 4 files from cricut.com at http://us.cricut.com/home/support/cricut-designstudio-reg-support/ to update Cricut Design Studio from the original disk/old version and then tried to use SCAL2 to cut with the Cricut Expression (the older version). Does it work?

Unknown said...

I have a cricut expression running on 2.43 as well as SCAL2 however I cannot figure out how to print with the SCAL2 as it does not recognize my cricut. Any tips?

Narelle said...

@Gail: I was just able to download the files. (You only need the first 3 by the way.)

Narelle said...

@Angela. I haven't tried mine for a while but it has always worked for me. I'll have a tinker later. Will just have to retrieve the Expression from the back of my cupboard and dust it off. :)

Unknown said...

hi! Can you help me get the old version of firmware for my cricut? I Updated it at some point but don't remember doing so and now it is not working with my SCAL! HELP!

Narelle said...

Laurel, I can't help with an old version of the Cricut firmware. But I can tell you than my Expression has the latest firmware version and still works with SCAL2.

Paula said...

Can someone help. I have a cricut create running 1.50 firmware but need 1.51-1.54 for my SCAL2 but update is newer version. Help im new to all this

Narelle said...

I don't believe you can get that firmware version Paula. I have the latest version of the Expression firmware installed and SCAL2 works for me. Maybe the same will apply to the Create.

Unknown said...

You can update to a correct version to use with SCAL2 if you update the firmware using the old Cricut Design Studio software. I did this several months ago because I accidentally updated my Create firmware with Cricut Craft Room and then it no longer worked in SCAL2. It worked after I rolled back the firmware with the old Cricut Design Studio that I had. I don't know if the free trial version is anywhere on the Internet but If you can find it and download it, that should also work. Just know that you cannot use both Cricut Craft Room and SCAL2 on your Create because they require different firmware versions.

Unknown said...

If I understand it correctly, the Cricut Create is the only machine that will not work with both Cricut Craft Room and SCAL2 at the same time. This is because the newest firmware for the Create does not work with SCAL2. In addition--in order to use the online software, Cricut Craft Room forces the download of the newest firmware to your Create machine.
Thus you have to decide if you want to use Cricut Craft Room or SCAL2 with your Create machine. My Expression will work with both programs even with the firmware upgrade; but, I have dedicated my Create to use cartridges and SCAL2 and Cricut Design Studio (no Cricut Craft Room). I use my Create when I am traveling in my Motorhome because the Create is more compact. I use the Expression at home for larger projects and when I want to use Cricut Craft Room.

Narelle – This is re: your response to post of Feb 12, 2015 and your response of Mar 1, 2015.
I just want to confirm that I understand your response.

My orig question: Has anyone recently (2014-2015) tried to download the 4 files from cricut.com at http://us.cricut.com/home/support/cricut-designstudio-reg-support/ to update Cricut Design Studio from the original disk/old version and then tried to use SCAL2 to cut with the Cricut Expression (the older version). Does it work?

You responded that you had downloaded the files. However, did you execute the download files to update CDS? If so, were you able to use CDS and SCAL2 to cut with a Cricut Expression. Like others, I am fearful of executing these downloads and no longer being able to use SCAL2 with my CE. Note: I am aware that you CANNOT update the firmware on the CE as it will stop ability to use SCAL2 with the CE.

Thanks

Narelle said...

Just to make sure I dragged my Expression and my old laptop out of the cupboard and dusted them off.

You are incorrect about the firmware. The firmware on my Expression is 2.43. That is the most recent and final> firmware version. There have been no more Firmware updates since that one and there will not be any further updates.

The files at http://us.cricut.com/home/support/cricut-designstudio-reg-support/ are the most recent and final Design Studio program and cartridge update files. There will be no more of those. The first file is the Program update. The 2nd & 3rd files are cartridge updates.

I have SCAL 2 on my laptop
I have Design Studio on my laptop

I can cut from both programs. (Only one can be open at a time or the Expression doesn't know which program to cut from).

As far as I'm aware the only Cricut that can't be updated to the latest cricut firmware version and still be compatible with SCAL2 is the Cricut Create.

Hope that helps
Narelle

Narelle,

I have a cricut personal cutter and a cricut expresson. I recently sent my gypsy in for service. When I got it back it worked with the expression but when I tried to get it to work with the personal cutter, it said had to update the circuit. I believe that if I update (I now have v1.34) it will not work with SCAL2. I have the machines in two different locations so I use them both with the gypsy and with the SCAL2. What are your thoughts? If I update the personal cutter higher than v1.34 will it prevent me from using SCAL2. I'm so mad at PC for preventing us to use the programs we want with our machines. I've been tempted to go to a different machine, but have too much invested at this point. I would appreciate any help you can give. thanks.
Charlotte

Unknown said...

I have the original cricut expression but not a personal cutter. I recently researched the web for comments about updating firmware from 1.34 to 1.43. Craft room will also ask if you want to update firmware. From what I have seen consistently, DON'T DO IT!!! if you want to continue to use SCAL2. Many have said they did and then couldn't use SCAL2. PC customer service will tell you that the update works for some and not others...but I am not going to take that chance.

Let's see what Narelle says. But it seems that PC programmers put something in the software to prevent usage. It is frustrating and outrageous - especially when SCAL2 was available PRIOR TO the lawsuit.

Narelle said...

Just dragged my Personal out of the cupboard and booted up my old laptop with SCAL 2 on it.

My Personal has firmware version 1.45 on it and works perfectly with SCAL 2.

And there hasn't been an update to the firmware since 2012.

I don't believe PC put anything in any software to prevent the Cricut being used with SCAL 1 or 2. They relied on the honesty of SCAL & MTC to abide by the agreement they came to that they themselves would take out the plugin required to use the Cricut with their software. And that was only from any copies of SCAL or MTC purchased after that date.

Thanks so much for your reply. I do have one other question. I've read on lone in different forums that some corteges will not work with the gypsy/cricut unless it has the latest firmware. Do you know anything about this and is there a way to tell if a cartridge requires a certain version of firmware? Appreciate your expertise on all this. Thanks, Charlotte

Narelle said...

The latest cartridges can't be used in the Gypsy because they haven't been added to the Gypsy library yet. But they'll all still work in the Cricut. And they'll work with CCR.

I'm not sure about whether old Firmware plays a part in a cart not working in a Cricut. I vaguely remember something about that with the Cricut Imagine. But not any of the other older Cricuts.

TotellyTrendyByCindy said...

Hello Narelle,
I wanted to confirm if all the newer cartridges will work on my older Expression ver. 2.35? And, do you know anything further if the newer cartridges will work in the Imagine ver. 1.01? What is the newest version for the Imagine as well? Also, I've never used Design Studio, and have no intentions to do so. Are these 2 cartridge update files you speak of (4 files for Design Studio) just for use with Design Studio? Thanks so much for further insight :o)

Narelle said...

All the Cricut cartridges will work in your Expression. I think the Imagine will have to be updated to read the newer carts, but that update was released quite a few years ago. The latest Imagine firmware version is listed above.

The cartridge update files you mentioned are only for Design Studio so not something you need to worry about.

TotellyTrendyByCindy said...

Thank you Narelle. I haven't used my Imagine or Expression machine for a few years now. So, I know I need to update my firmware in my Imagine for sure, but will leave my Expression as is so it will work with my svg software. Thanks for confirming the latest firmware version for the Imagine too. I just wasn't sure how updated that information above actually was. Wishing you a great weekend :o)

Kelle said...

So I have read through the comments. I updated my cricut expression to 2.43. I haven't used my cricut in years. I didn't know anything went on between Scal and Cricut. I tried sending something to cut and it wouldn't work. Just stayed on checking mat. Do you have any suggestions for me. I really don't want to go buy the new cricut just to be able to cut my own images and fonts.

TotellyTrendyByCindy said...

Kelle ... do you have a cartridge (any cartridge will do) plugged into your Expression's port? And, did you hit *Load Mat* on your machine's keypad?

Kesmith said...

I have the E2. Can anyone you tell me what is the newest firmware version should be. I'm not sure if I should update. It's been awhile since I used it. Mine is currently 1.01 (0081:0040:0240).

Narelle said...

That's the latest version of the E2 firmware Kelly. It's unlikely that there will be any further updates.

OK. So I currently have a Cricut Personal cutter that I used Craftroom to update to v1.45. I am running windows 8 and sometimes have an issue where craftroom does not recognize the machine. If I turn it on/off a few times and/or unplug the USB it will work for a period of time. Is this normal being that this machine is quite old?

I am also looking at purchasing an Expression 2 machine. Which program do I need to update it to the most recent firmware? There are so many Cricut programs I am not sure what the order of them are.

I know for the Personal cutter I had to use Design Studio, then Craftroom to update it. I see some posts saying that I need to use Sync to update the expression 2.

Any guidance would be appreciated Narelle..

Narelle said...

Michael, it's possible it's the age of the machine. The USB port could be wearing out. Or it could be the USB cord. Definitely worth trying a new cord.

To update the E2 you will indeed need to use Cricut Sync. You can get it here: http://us.cricut.com/home/support/cricut-sync

You can also use the E2 with Cricut Craft Room.

Be aware that all of those Cricuts are using the older technology. If you ever want the ability to cut uploaded images (jpg/png/svg's etc) or fonts other than Cricut fonts you should look at the Cricut Explore range.

Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Narelle

Unknown said...

Narelle,

Thank you for your quick response.
The USB cord I am using is new direct from Cricut.
I think it may be a driver issue. I am uninstalling the drivers and re installing them to see if this corrects my current issues with the Personal machine.

The deal I had with the E2 machine fell thru so I will look into the Explore series machine.

I did not know all the improvements on the Explore series..

Thanks for the GR8 information..

Hi all,

I'm reading that there are those of us (myself included) who have older Cricuts and would like to use SCAL. As we're all aware, the newer versions of SCAL won't work on the Cricuts (thanks, Cricut!) However, if you can find a copy of the older versions of SCAL (preferably V.2, you'll be in luck. Here's the good news. Look on Amazon, that's where you'll find it. Here's the not-so-good-news. Be prepared to begin your next odyssey because appears to work for some and not for others. Here's why I'm here. Some said to update my firmware, which I did. However, in doing so my firmware appeared to update 'too much'...to Version 1.45. NOW it appears to not want to work for a different reason. I've read from one end of the internet to the other and I know SCAL works for many people so I refuse to give up. Also, I've read a lot of reviews, including some on Amazon that indicated that you couldn't reach the Customer Service at SCAL. That simply isn't true. They are the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. So...bottom line. It's worth taking the chance, because if and when you get it to work, it's absolutely so going to awesome. Keep trying. If anyone has any good news to share, I'm definitely listening!

As of today 10/7/2016 I was able to update my cricut expressions to 2.43 and still use my SCAl2 program with no problems and now I can also use craftroom to cut also. When I select which version machine I have before cutting just choose v2.3. Tanks to all who previously commented.

Unknown said...

Charlet-
I am currently trying to get my circuit expression that was already updated to work with my SCAL2 program. I just keep getting a failure to load usb drivers. Did you ever get this? When I select v2.3 it still doesn't work. Thanks in advance!

Unknown said...

I just had extensive email with Provo/cricut staff who said that if you download Cricut Design Studio from their website (seem to be many like me who still use it), the software will auto update a Cricut expression machine to ver 5.7, making it impossible to use the machine with SCAL2 software. As you know SCAL2 will only work with the machine if the firmware is not higher than 2.34. I am not going to take a change on installing CDS and loosing ability to use wonderful SCAL2. Now have to go back to using cartridges to cut with no software...ugh...all because of Provo greed.
